Potassium (serum)

Potassium (serum)

Used for the determination of serum potassium on the Beckman Coulter UniCel DxC600 Synchron Clinical System.

Instrument: Beckman Coulter UniCel DxC600

Specimen Type: Serum

NOTE: Unable to report results for hemolyzed or grossly lipemic specimens.

Volume per test: 40uL (min volume 150uL)

Principle:

Sodium and Potassium ion concentrations are determined by indirect potentiometry. The sodium method utilizes two glass sodium electrodes (one acts as the reference electrode), whereas the potassium method utilizes a potassium selective electrode in conjunction with a sodium reference electrode.

To measure the concentrations of either electrolyte, a precise volume of sample (40µL) is mixed with a buffered solution at a ratio of 1:33. The high molarity buffer used establishes a constant activity coefficient for sodium or potassium ions, calibrating the electrode to concentration values.

Testing Range: 1-15 mmol/L
